Electronics & PCB Assembly

In electronics assembly, tape is a process material. It masks during soldering and plating, splices carrier and cover tape, protects gold fingers, and insulates flexible circuits. It is judged on two things: does it survive the process, and does it come off clean.

Polyimide film tape is the workhorse here, with PET film tape covering less demanding steps.

What this application demands

High-temperature survival

Wave soldering and reflow expose masking tape to 200 °C and above for short periods.

Clean removal

Any adhesive residue left on a gold finger or a masking area becomes a yield loss.

Thin, conformable film

Tape must sit flat on fine-pitch parts and conform to flex circuits without bridging.

No contamination

Ionic contamination and silicone transfer are process risks, not cosmetic issues.

How to specify it

Specification pointWhat to state on your enquiry
Process temperaturePeak temperature and dwell time of the soldering or curing step
Residue requirementWhether clean removal is verified and by which method
Slit widthNarrow widths and the tolerance your applicator can hold
Cleanliness classAny ionic contamination or silicone-free requirement

Common specification mistakes

Watch out for this: using a general masking tape

Paper and PVC masking tapes either scorch or leave residue at reflow temperatures.

Watch out for this: assuming all polyimide behaves alike

Adhesive chemistry drives residue performance; specify the removal requirement, not just the film.

Watch out for this: ordering the wrong slit width

Below about 3 mm, edge quality from slitting matters as much as the film itself.
