                <p>Interior harness tape is one of the few components that can fail a vehicle programme without failing a mechanical test. Odour and fogging complaints are investigated by the vehicle manufacturer’s materials team, and the tape is usually the component under suspicion.</p>
<h2>What VOC and fogging actually measure</h2>
<p>Volatile organic compound testing measures what a material releases into the air inside a closed cabin, typically after heating. Fogging measures the condensable film that forms on a glass surface. They are related but separate tests, and a supplier can pass one and not the other.</p>
<h2>Where the emissions come from</h2>
<ul>
<li>The adhesive: rubber-based systems and solvent residues are the usual sources</li>
<li>The backing: certain coatings and dyes release volatiles as they age</li>
<li>The process: incomplete drying after coating leaves solvent in the roll</li>
</ul>
<h2>What to write into the specification</h2>
<div class="table-wrap">
<table class="data-tape">
<thead>
<tr>
<th>Requirement</th>
<th>What to state</th>
</tr>
</thead>
<tbody>
<tr>
<td>VOC limit</td>
<td>The limit and the test method your OEM uses</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Fogging</td>
<td>Whether a fogging requirement applies, and its limit</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Odour</td>
<td>Any panel-test requirement and the acceptable rating</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Declaration</td>
<td>Whether a material declaration is required at PPAP stage</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
</div>
<h2>Why the tape specification changes the answer</h2>
<p>Low-VOC behaviour is a property of the construction, so it cannot be improved after the fact. If your programme has an interior VOC requirement, it has to be part of the tape specification from the first sample — which means choosing a supplier who can coat to that requirement rather than a distributor who can only offer what is in stock.</p>
<h2>The practical takeaway</h2>
<p>For interior runs, specify low-VOC grades explicitly and ask for the declaration at sample stage, not at PPAP. Re-testing a harness after a materials complaint is far more expensive than choosing the right tape the first time. Constructions compliant with RoHS 2.0 and REACH, with low VOC and class A noise damping, are available across standard PET cloth and fleece harness tapes.</p>

                <p>This is one of the few tape decisions that is genuinely about your factory rather than your product. The two PET cloth tapes — hand-tearable and non-tearable — come from the same family of polyester fabric constructions, and the differences show up in how they behave on the harness board.</p>
<h2>What actually differs</h2>
<div class="table-wrap">
<table class="data-tape">
<thead>
<tr>
<th>Aspect</th>
<th>Hand-tearable</th>
<th>Non-tearable</th>
</tr>
</thead>
<tbody>
<tr>
<td>Application speed</td>

<td>Edge quality</td>
<td>Ragged tear line</td>
<td>Clean cut edge</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Best for</td>
<td>Manual wrapping, rework, service</td>
<td>Automated cutting, high-wear runs</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
</div>
<h2>Choose hand-tearable when labour is the constraint</h2>
<p>If operators wrap harness branches by hand, hand-tearable tape removes a tool from the process. That matters most for short branches, for rework stations and for low-volume harnesses where set-up time dominates.</p>
<h2>Choose non-tearable when protection is the constraint</h2>
<p>Where a harness runs against brackets, body panels or other hard parts, the tougher construction and clean edge of a non-tearable cloth tape hold up better. It is also the sensible choice when the tape is applied by a machine that cuts to length, because the tape is being cut anyway.</p>
<h2>The cost calculation that matters</h2>
<p>The instinct is to compare price per roll. In practice, the relevant number is cost per finished harness, which includes how long the wrap takes, how often the operator has to fetch a tool, and how many harnesses need rework after a failed abrasion test. A tape that costs a little more per roll and halves the wrapping time is usually the cheaper tape.</p>
<h2>A practical middle path</h2>
<p>Many harness shops use both: hand-tearable tape for the majority of wrapping, and non-tearable tape on the high-wear positions identified by their own durability testing. Since the two constructions share the same temperature and VOC performance envelope, mixing them does not complicate the approval file.</p>

                <p>A tape datasheet is a marketing document and a technical document at the same time. Learning which lines are specifications and which are typical values will save you from a substitution that passes on paper and fails on the line.</p>
<h2>Typical values are not guarantees</h2>
<p>Most tape datasheets carry a line such as “the above parameters are typical values for reference only”. That is honest, and it also means the numbers are not contractual. If a parameter matters to your process, ask for it to be specified with a tolerance and confirmed on the order acknowledgement.</p>
<h2>The five lines that decide most applications</h2>
<div class="table-wrap">
<table class="data-tape">
<thead>
<tr>
<th>Line</th>
<th>What to check</th>
</tr>
</thead>
<tbody>
<tr>
<td>Total thickness</td>
<td>Is there a tolerance, and does it include the adhesive?</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Adhesive type</td>
<td>Rubber, acrylic or silicone — this drives temperature and residue behaviour more than the backing does</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Peel adhesion</td>
<td>Measured against which substrate, and after what dwell time?</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Service temperature</td>
<td>Continuous or short-term? Both, ideally</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Tensile strength</td>
<td>Relevant whenever the tape is also structural</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
</div>
<h2>Watch the units</h2>
<p>Adhesion appears as N/cm, N/25mm or g/25mm depending on the manufacturer and the region. They are not the same number in different clothing: 4.5 N/cm is 11.25 N/25mm, which is roughly 11,250 g/25mm. Comparing two datasheets without converting first is one of the most common sourcing mistakes.</p>
<h2>Check what is missing</h2>
<p>What a datasheet does not say is often more revealing than what it does. If there is no breakdown voltage for an insulation tape, no flame rating for a harness tape, or no adhesion figure at all, treat the tape as unspecified and ask for the missing data.</p>
<h2>Ask for the batch report</h2>
<p>A datasheet describes a construction. A batch test report describes the rolls on your pallet. For any qualification or PPAP-style approval, ask for both — and check that the lot number on the report matches the label on the roll.</p>
<h2>Where UL and CSA fit in</h2>
<p>Recognition marks apply to specific constructions and file numbers, not to everything a company sells. If your approval file depends on UL or CSA recognition, ask for the certificate copy and check that the construction in the certificate is the one you are buying.</p>

Layer insulation in a transformer, coil wrapping in a motor, and end-turn insulation all rely on dielectric strength that stays stable when humidity rises. Acetate cloth also conforms to curved coil ends without lifting, which matters when a winding is built by hand.</p><h2>Specify PET cloth tape when</h2><p>The tape has to survive mechanical abuse. Harness tape is judged on abrasion class, temperature and &mdash; inside a vehicle &mdash; noise damping. PET polyester fabric carries a class D abrasion rating in the standard 0.25&nbsp;mm harness grade, and the range includes both non-tearable versions for maximum protection and hand-tearable versions for speed.</p><h2>The overlap, and how to resolve it</h2><p>There is one genuine grey area: bundling leads inside a motor or a transformer. Here both tapes can work. The question to ask is whether the tape is providing insulation between conductors, or just holding them together. If it is between conductors, use acetate cloth tape and specify the dielectric requirement. If it is holding a bundle together inside a housing, a PET cloth tape is usually cheaper and more resistant to abrasion.</p><h2>Do not mix them up in a drawing</h2><p>Because both are black cloth tapes, a bill of materials that says only &ldquo;black cloth tape&rdquo; is an open invitation to substitute the wrong one. Write the base material (polyester acetate cloth or PET polyester fabric), the thickness and the performance requirement into the drawing.</p><p><strong>Tapes mentioned in this guide:</strong> <a href="../c8020-acetate-cloth-tape/">C8020 acetate cloth tape</a> &middot; <a href="../b1300-b1600-pet-cloth-tape-non-tearable/">B1300 / B1600 PET cloth tape</a></p>

They overlap in price-sensitive cases and not at all in extreme ones, so the choice is usually driven by the temperature band and the surface behaviour you need.</p><h2>The three families at a glance</h2><div class="table-wrap"><table class="data-tape"><thead><tr><th>Family</th><th>Typical service temperature</th><th>Strength</th><th>Typical use</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>PET film tape</td><td>up to about 180&nbsp;&deg;C</td><td>Good dielectric strength, low cost, clean removal</td><td>Masking, splicing, general insulation</td></tr><tr><td>Polyimide (PI) film tape</td><td>up to about 260&nbsp;&deg;C short term, high continuous class</td><td>Very thin and tough</td><td>Wave-solder masking, class H insulation, battery work</td></tr><tr><td>PTFE coated glass cloth</td><td>&minus;70&nbsp;&deg;C to 260&nbsp;&deg;C</td><td>Non-stick, low friction, high tensile strength</td><td>Heat-sealing bars, bag-making, release surfaces</td></tr></tbody></table></div><h2>Choose PET film tape when</h2><p>The application runs below about 180&nbsp;&deg;C and you need insulation or masking at a sensible cost. A 0.05&nbsp;mm PET film tape with a silicone adhesive typically offers around 5&nbsp;kV breakdown voltage, which covers most general electrical work, and it removes cleanly from most surfaces.</p><h2>Choose polyimide tape when</h2><p>Space and temperature are the constraints at the same time: fine-pitch masking that must come off without residue, class H winding insulation, or insulation inside a battery pack. Polyimide films are thin enough to fit a tight gap and still hold their electrical properties at temperatures where PET would deform.</p><h2>Choose PTFE tape when</h2><p>The problem is not insulation but adhesion &mdash; or rather the deliberate absence of it. PTFE coated glass cloth is used on heat-sealing jaws, form-fill-seal machines and release surfaces, where a non-stick, low-friction surface with high tensile strength is the whole point. It is also the only one of the three that is genuinely useful at both &minus;70&nbsp;&deg;C and 260&nbsp;&deg;C.</p><h2>What to put on the enquiry</h2><ul><li>Continuous operating temperature and the peak with its duration</li><li>Whether the tape is masking (temporary) or insulating (permanent)</li><li>The surface it will be applied to</li><li>Any dielectric requirement, in kV and thickness</li><li>Whether clean removal is verified, and how</li></ul><p>One more point worth stating: temperature ratings are not interchangeable between suppliers unless the test method is the same. When two datasheets disagree, the more conservative number is usually the one that reflects a continuous-use test.</p>

                <p>Most harness tape problems are traceable to a specification that was never written down. A tape gets chosen because it was already on the shelf, and the first real test is the customer’s durability bench. This checklist covers the six decisions that actually determine whether a harness tape works.</p>
<h2>1. Abrasion class</h2>
<p>Abrasion resistance is usually tested by rubbing a taped bundle against a standard abrasive medium and counting cycles until the tape is worn through. Ratings are commonly grouped into classes, with class D (roughly 1,000–4,999 cycles) being the normal automotive requirement and lighter classes used where the harness is protected by a conduit.</p>
<p>The trap: a tape can be thick and still perform poorly if the substrate is loosely woven. Ask for the abrasion class and the test method, not for the thickness alone.</p>
<h2>2. Continuous service temperature</h2>
<p>Two numbers get confused here. Continuous service temperature is the level the tape tolerates for the life of the vehicle. Short-term or peak temperature is what it survives during a process step. A tape rat — a tape rated −40 °C to 125 °C is normal for cabin and body runs; engine compartment runs typically need 150 °C — the difference between the B1300 and B1600 grades of <a href="../b1300-b1600-pet-cloth-tape-non-tearable/">PET cloth tape</a>.</p>
<h2>3. Noise damping</h2>
<p>Harness rattle is a warranty complaint, and it is fixed at the wrapping stage rather than later. Suppliers quote noise damping in dB(A) against a defined test; class A damping (≤2 dB(A)) is what interior and door harnesses normally require.</p>
<h2>4. Flammability and VOC</h2>
<p>Self-extinguishing behaviour matters in electrical and high-temperature environments, and low VOC matters wherever the harness sits in an enclosed space. If your customer has an odour or fogging requirement, state it on the enquiry — it rules out some adhesive chemistries immediately.</p>
<h2>5. Hand-tearable or non-tearable</h2>
<p>Tapes such as <a href="../by1300-pet-cloth-tape-hand-tearable/">BY1300 hand-tearable PET cloth tape</a> are faster on the harness board, while <a href="../b1300-b1600-pet-cloth-tape-non-tearable/">B1300 / B1600 non-tearable PET cloth tape</a> gives more abrasion protection. Neither is better in the abstract. If your operators use tools anyway, or your automated equipment cuts the tape, non-tearable is usually the right call.</p>
<h2>6. Substrate and residue</h2>
<p>Peel adhesion is normally quoted against steel. If you are wrapping a polypropylene conduit, a polyethylene sleeve or a painted panel, the same tape can behave very differently. And if the tape is removed during rework, the residue requirement is as important as the adhesion figure.</p>

<h2>Flame retardant electrical tape for coils and transformers</h2>
<p>The C8020 is a flame retardant electrical tape in a black polyester acetate cloth construction: B-class self-extinguishing, high dielectric strength, and resistant to moisture and mildew. That combination is why it is specified as a flame retardant electrical tape for coils, transformers and motors, where the tape is part of the insulation system rather than just a means of holding a bundle together.</p>
<p>Because it is hand-tearable and conforms to curved coil ends, it is also a practical flame retardant tape for repair and rewinding work. Where the requirement is a general-purpose flame retardant tape for bundling, a PET cloth grade such as the B1300 covers it at lower cost.</p>
<h2>Acetate tape: common questions</h2>
<h3>Is this an acetate tape or a cloth tape?</h3>
<p>Both. Acetate tape is the common short name for a polyester acetate cloth tape — a woven acetate cloth backing, not a film.</p>
<h3>What flame rating does it hold?</h3>
<p>B-class self-extinguishing flame retardancy. Ask for the test data with your quotation if the rating has to go into an approval file.</p>
<h3>Where is acetate tape used instead of PVC tape?</h3>
<p>Inside coils and transformers. PVC tape is a film tape for wiring and colour coding; acetate tape is an insulating tape that has to follow a curved winding and hold its dielectric strength in humid conditions.</p>
<h3>Is there a difference between acetate tape and acetate fabric tape?</h3>
<p>No. Acetate fabric tape, acetate cloth tape and acetate tape describe the same woven polyester acetate backing — the names differ by supplier and by region.</p>
<h3>Can this be used as acetate cloth insulation tape in a class F winding?</h3>
<p>It is commonly specified as acetate cloth insulation tape for layer and end-turn insulation. Send us the insulation class and the layer thickness and we will confirm whether the construction fits, or whether a polyimide tape is needed.</p>

<h2>Insulation cloth tape with a non-stick surface</h2>
<p>The TF8260 is a glass-fibre insulation cloth tape coated with PTFE emulsion, rated −70 °C to 260 °C. It is technically a cloth tape, but its surface behaves differently from a conventional insulating cloth tape: nothing sticks to it, which is the whole point on heat-sealing bars, form-fill-seal jaws and release surfaces.</p>
<p>If you need an insulation cloth tape that holds a bundle together, use a PET cloth grade. If you need a surface that will not stick and will not burn at 260 °C, this is the tape.</p>

<h2>High temperature insulation tape for class H work</h2>
<p>The PI5300 is a high temperature insulation tape for the jobs where the temperature and the gap are both tight: class H winding insulation, busbar and cell insulation in a battery pack, and wave-solder masking that has to come off without residue. Polyimide film is thin enough to fit between layers and still hold its dielectric properties where a PET or PVC tape would deform.</p>

<h2>High temperature electrical tape to 180 °C</h2>
<p>The PT5200 is a high temperature electrical tape built on 0.050 mm PET film with a silicone adhesive: around 5 kV breakdown voltage, 180 °C heat resistance and clean removal even after a soldering or curing cycle. In polyester film tape terms it sits between general-purpose PVC tape and polyimide tape, which is what makes it the usual choice for masking and splicing on power-supply and appliance lines.</p>
<p>Buyers who search for tape polyester usually need exactly this: a polyester film backing with a temperature rating, rather than a cloth construction. If the process runs above 180 °C, step up to the PI5300 polyimide grade.</p>
<h2>PET film tape: common questions</h2>
<h3>Is this the same as polyester film tape?</h3>
<p>Yes — PET is the abbreviation for polyester film. The PT5200 is a polyester film tape with a silicone adhesive.</p>
<h3>Can it be used as a high temperature electrical tape in a battery pack?</h3>
<p>It can be used for general pack insulation. For busbar and cell work at higher temperatures, the polyimide PI5300 is the better fit.</p>

<h2>Standard &amp; certification</h2>
<p>ROHS · REACH</p>
<h2>Automotive wire tape where conformity matters</h2>
<p>Fleece tape is the soft option in an automotive wire tape programme. Where a run passes through a grommet, a clip or a tight radius, the non-woven backing deforms instead of lifting at the edges, so the wrap stays closed. That is also why it is used as automotive harness tape in door and cabin runs where rattle has to be designed out rather than fixed later.</p>
<h2>Fleece wire harness tape: common questions</h2>
<h3>When should I use fleece tape instead of a cloth wire harness tape?</h3>
<p>Where the surface is irregular or the radius is tight. Cloth tape gives more abrasion protection; fleece tape conforms better and dampens noise.</p>

<h2>Fabric electrical tape for fast harness wrapping</h2>
<p>The BY1300 is a fabric electrical tape in the literal sense: a woven polyester fabric backing with a synthetic rubber adhesive, designed to be torn by hand. On a harness board that removes a tool from the process, which is why this grade is usually chosen over a non-tearable wire harness tape wherever wrapping speed drives the cost.</p>
<h2>Fabric electrical tape: common questions</h2>
<h3>How is fabric electrical tape different from PVC electrical tape?</h3>
<p>PVC tape is a film tape used for insulation and colour coding. A fabric electrical tape such as the BY1300 is a bundling and abrasion tape: it wraps a harness bundle and protects it mechanically.</p>
<h3>What temperature does it hold?</h3>
<p>−40 °C to 125 °C continuous, with B-class self-extinguishing flame retardancy.</p>

<h2>Wire harness tape for automotive harness lines</h2>
<p>Most B1300 and B1600 volume goes into wire harness tape applications: wrapping main runs, branches and connector legs on automotive harness boards. Where a run crosses a bracket or a body panel, the non-tearable construction keeps the bundle intact under vibration, and the class D abrasion rating is what makes this grade an automotive harness tape rather than a general-purpose cloth tape.</p>
<p>Engine compartment runs use the B1600 grade, which holds 150 °C continuously. For cabin and door harnesses, automotive cloth tape is usually specified for noise damping as much as for abrasion resistance, and this grade covers both.</p>
<h2>Electrical cloth tape for appliances, motors and panels</h2>
<p>The same construction is supplied as electrical cloth tape for appliance, motor and panel work, where a fabric-backed tape has to bundle leads, finish coils and protect cable entries. As a wire cloth tape it holds a bundle together without the adhesive bleeding at elevated temperature, and it can be applied by hand or cut to length on a machine.</p>
<h2>Wire wrapping and bundling</h2>
<p>As wire wrapping tape it ties cable looms, finishes a wrapped bundle and protects an automotive wire tape run that crosses a sharp edge. The woven backing resists scuffing better than a film tape of the same thickness. Supplied as slit rolls, log rolls and die-cut pieces.</p>
<h2>Wire harness tape: common questions</h2>
<h3>Which grade should I specify for a wire harness tape application?</h3>
<p>Start from the temperature at the tape: B1300 for up to 125 °C, B1600 for up to 150 °C. Both carry the same class D abrasion rating and class A noise damping.</p>
<h3>Can the same tape be used as electrical cloth tape?</h3>
<p>Yes. The construction is the same; only the application differs. Tell us whether the tape is going onto a harness loom or into an appliance, and we will confirm width and core size.</p>
<h3>Is it hand-tearable?</h3>
<p>No — the B1300 and B1600 are the non-tearable grades, chosen where abrasion protection matters more than wrapping speed. Use the BY1300 if you need a hand-tearable wire harness tape.</p>
